West and Central Africa
The ball python is a dark brown snake with light brown blotches on its back and sides. Ball pythons are native to West and Central Africa. They are sometimes referred to as Royal pythons because, it is believed, African rulers may have worn live pythons as jewelry. They can grow up to 72 inches in length. The ball python is revered by the Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria where it is a symbol of the Earth.
