United States, Florida Panhandle to East Texas

Alligator snapping turtles are some of the heaviest freshwater turtles in the world and the largest freshwater turtle in North America. This species gets its name from powerful jaws and the distinct ridges on its shell that can resemble the rough, ridged skin of an alligator.
