At Wild Adventures Theme Park, some of our favorite moments aren’t planned. They happen naturally, and if you’re in the right place at the right time, you get to see something special.

That’s exactly what’s happening at our Giraffe Overlook.

Our giraffe Bakari and a zebra named Kurtsie have formed an unexpected bond. And it’s starting to get attention far beyond South Georgia, including a recent feature on Good Morning America.

Once you see them together, it makes sense.

A Bond That Grew Naturally

Kurtsie was born in December 2023, shortly after we introduced our zebra herd into the giraffe habitat. From the beginning, Bakari was curious.

Then it turned into something more.

As Kurtsie grew, she began to do what young zebras often do. She started to branch away from the herd. What stood out is who she chose to spend her time with.

She chose Bakari.

Now, the two are rarely far apart. You’ll see them walking side by side, sharing space in the barn, or resting together out in the field. Kurtsie even follows Bakari during giraffe feedings, staying close as he interacts with guests.

What It Means for Them

For our animal care team, this is exactly what we hope to see.

Our mixed-species habitat is designed to give animals the chance to interact and build relationships over time. And every now and then, something like this develops.

Kurtsie has grown more confident and relaxed, often taking cues from Bakari’s calm nature. Bakari, who is naturally social, has become more engaged and even a little protective with her nearby.

You’ll often catch them lying down together in the field. For a giraffe, that’s a big deal. They only rest like that when they feel completely safe.

“This is the kind of interaction we hope to see in a space like this,” said Sarah Plain, one of our animal care specialists. “What you’re seeing between them is a real bond.”

Why It Stands Out

We get to see a lot of incredible things here. But this is the kind of moment that makes you pause.

Two animals, different species, choosing to stay close.

When you see it in person, it sticks with you.

See It for Yourself

You can find Bakari and Kurtsie at our Giraffe Overlook during your visit. Or catch a glimpse of them from the Safari Train as it moves through the habitat.

Every day is a little different. But if you spend a few minutes watching, you’ll see it.

And once you do, you won’t forget it.
