Indian Crested Porcupine
(Hystrix Indica)
Habitat/Range
Rocky hillsides, scrublands, grasslands, and forests across Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and parts of the Middle East
The Indian Crested Porcupine is one of Asia’s largest and most distinctive rodents, known for its long, sharp quills and impressive crest that can be raised when it feels threatened. These quills, made of keratin, are often banded in black and white and serve as an effective defense along with a rattling tail sound and the ability to back into predators, causing quills to detach on contact. Mostly active at night, this porcupine spends its days resting in burrows or rocky shelters and feeds on roots, fruits, bark, and other plant material, even chewing on bones to gain important minerals. Found in a wide range of habitats from forests to deserts, it is highly adaptable and often lives alone or in small family groups, making it a fascinating and resilient animal.
