Redtail Boa

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Boa constrictor constrictor

Like many other boa constrictors which exhibit distinctive markings unique to these reptiles, the redtail boa is patterned with brown or reddish brown "saddles" that become more pronounced towards the tail. The coloring works as effective camouflage in the jungles and forests of its natural habitat.  Because of the temperament of the redtail boa and its beautiful coloration, it is a popular species among the pet trade.  Redtail boas can grow up to 15 feet long and weigh more than 100 pounds.  Like other boa constrictors, the redtail boa is an ambush predator and will often wait for an appropriate prey to cross its path, after which it will attack.  Their jaws are lined with small, hooked teeth for grabbing and holding prey.  The boa will first strike at the prey, grabbing it with its teeth, and then constrict the prey until death before consuming it whole.  It takes approximately 4-6 days to fully digest the food, depending on the size of the prey and the local temperature.  The diet of a redtail boa consists of small mice, birds, bats, lizards and amphibians.
