SCIENTIFIC NAME: Taurotragus oryx

The Common Eland is the largest living antelope. They're remarkably fast with recorded speeds of 42 mph. This large antelope is also an exceptional jumper and can clear heights of 5 feet. The common eland is a very gregarious species and is most active in the morning and late afternoon. They're always found in large herds, with no dispersion during the rainy season. A possible explanation for this is the "safety-in-numbers" strategy. The family group consists of large mixed groups, usually 25-70 individuals, though up to 400 have been observed. Adult males within a maternal herd have a distinct social hierarchy. Both sexes have horns that are 2-3 feet long and the eland use the long horns to help obtain food that is out of reach. They also use their tongue to grasp food. The eland also has scent glands that are behind their hooves and they use them to communication and to attract mates.
