SCIENTIFIC NAME:  Oryx gazella

This large pale gray African grazing antelope has large black patches on its rump and upper hindlegs. The males are heavier than females, with a thicker neck and horns. Female horns are equally as long as males, growing to 3.6-4 feet.

The oryx's ability to survive in waterless areas is second only to that of the Addax. Mixed herds are formed, each dominated by an alpha bull who treats subordinate males like unreceptive females. The oryx is highly nomadic in the desert, where it will travel long distances to find water holes or water-bearing vegetation.
